The need for the new gear comes from a grim task department members face every summer.
"This will mainly be for underwater recovery/rescue. We have three to five drownings per year at Grayson Lake," Morgan said, explaining cliff diving remains a contributing cause to the lake's injuries and drownings despite a posted ban and $500 fine for the activity.
The scuba masks with wireless communications are especially valuable to the divers, Morgan explained, "because at Grayson Lake visibility is a foot to 2 feet," and divers have to rely on close proximity and hand signals while performing a rescue or recovery effort.
